Are Our Cell Phones Really Harming Us?

iPhone (2)It used to be, when cellular phones were first introduced, they were so large and cumbersome (remember the one from the movies that looked like a grey brick with a black antenna sticking out the top of it), you mainly found them not carried directly “on” humans. They were heavy, awkward, expensive, and were a novelty similar to the first black and white television set on the block that everyone crowded around in awe of. Today however, with amazing developments in technology and computers, they’ve become pocket-sized, extremely mobile, and are now carried everywhere, by nearly everyone, on their person.

Let’s be clear on one thing that we know as factual: the cellular phone relies on the use of radiations for its functioning. Since the whole world has been lured by this necessity, there is always a concern about the harmful effects of what those radiations do to the human body. Especially since today mobile phone are practically an extension of our own bodies. People sleep with them, keep them in their pockets for days on end, keeping those radiations in direct contact with living, sensitive tissue.

Ever since 1993, when man named David Raynard filed a lawsuit claimed his wife had developed a brain tumor because of the use of her cell phone, researchers have conducted studies to find out if cellular phones really do emit radiations that are harmful to humans. While some of those studies have suggested that the microwaves emitted by the earliest of cell phones increased the cancer cells in mice, there still to this day is not conclusive proof that cell phone radiations are harmful to human beings.

Here are some truths regarding radiation and cellular phones:

  • Cellular phone users do not run a higher risk of getting cancer than non users.
  • Frequent users of cell phones do not have a higher risk of getting non-malignant tumors than those who rarely use them.
  • It is false that brain tumors tend to develop on the side of the head where the phone is primarily used.
  • Though some models, like the iPhone from Apple seem to emit a great deal of surface heat, that heating is not conclusively doing any damage.
  • There has not yet been enough time for many long-term studies to be conducted, therefore a concrete link between cell phones and and health issues has not been adequately defined.
  • The very public frenzy regarding public safety and health risks associated with cellular phone exposure has been been grossly created and made worse by an overactive media and various companies selling products trying to gain market positioning through fear.
  • The videos on YouTube and other media showing cell phones popping corn and frying eggs from the radiation they emit are completely fake.
  • An enormous study out of Denmark that followed 420,000 cellular phone users for 13 years could not conclusively find any proof that the group suffered any ill health effects different from non-users.
  • The World Health Organization says that cell phone covers and other radiation “barrier protectors” being sold to protect you from cell phone radiation are “not justified”.

The truth is no one really knows yet what the lasting effects from prolonged cellular phone exposure are. Until conclusive evidence is available, you will need to decide for yourself, do you error on the side of caution and limit your usage, or do you simply go about your business and disregard any such threat? That all depends on your belief systems and how conservative of approach you want to take with the matter. It’s your judgment call.

We’ll keep an eye out for new studies coming out that may have anything new to offer.
