Do Supplements Work?
Guest Author: The Mighty Fit Grasshopper
In my years of experience working for a leading dietary supplement manufacturer, there happens to be one question that keeps popping up time and time again: “Do supplements work?”
My response: The question is better answered first by rephrasing the question to, “Do supplements work for me to ___________.” In other words, you’ll have to determine what your acceptable criteria for efficacy will be. Do you want a product that will simply maintain good health or do you want something to lower cholesterol levels?
When you define what your expectations of a product are, you’ll determine if a product is working for you or not.
Let me give you an example. I recently reviewed a fish oil product. The product is called Omega3+ Think. By the product name alone, it’s quite easy for the regular consumer to think, “This product will help me study better for my upcoming exams.” When that person takes the product and ends up getting a satisfactory test score, in her mind, she believes that the product did not work.
Written on the bottle, however, is the claim that it supports cognitive function and brain development. There isn’t any intention that the product will improve brain function or memorization, but only maintain your current cognitive abilities. With that in mind, the person takes the product and ends up getting a satisfactory test score. Since she did not perform badly on the test, the product did do what it intended to do and she concludes that the product works.
So do supplements work? Yes, they might! Keep your expectations real, read the labels carefully, keep up with the latest scientific research, and you be the judge.
